While I add in a few things here and there if I'm going to an event or if it's a special occasion, this is generally my routine for day-to-day! It's been a bit since I've shared my favorite makeup and beauty items and with summer on the horizon, I've been trying to simplify things as much as possible. I shared this post back in December and while Peach Perfect is still my favorite foundation, I've changed up a few other things!
Now that we're in our warmer weather months (and thanks to my lash extensions), I've got it paired down to this things in my makeup routine:
- Too Faced Peach Perfect Foundation
- It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Illumination Concealer
- Too Faced Sweetie Pie palette
- It Cosmetics Blush
- Bobbi Brown Highlight
It was time for me to restock on some items, so my latest purchase included:
- Peach Perfect Foundation
- Confidence in a Cream Moisturizer
- Rosebud Salve
- The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
- Byebye Undereye Concealer
- Drunk Elephant samples (free gift
I've mentioned some of these in my every day routine so they need no revisiting, but you can't go wrong with these other products. I love the Rosebud Salve (I also love the Vaseline version) and keep some version of it or the Vaseline in my makeup bag, purse, and beach bag. As I was checking out, Sephora got me with a product suggestion of The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid and I've only been using it a few days but I'll report back! For the price, it got really good reviews so I'm excited to see how it turns out.
I've also been wanting to try the Drunk Elephant products for quite some time, so I picked their sample set as my free gift. I used the face wash last night and my skin felt great after. I loved the moisturizer as well but to be honest, I still love my It Cosmetics and Lexli products just as much!
I don't know about y'all but my skin is already feeling this summertime sun! I try to take good care of my skin year round, but summer is so important especially since I live in a beach town where we spend a good portion of our time in the beautiful outdoors. Over Memorial Day Weekend, I spent almost every waking hour in the sun and my skin definitely felt it which was such a huge reminder to be diligent in my skincare routine.
I'm often asked about what products I use, and while I still have a few tried and true trusty favorites, I have also been really enjoying a new skincare line called Lexli. This aloe-based skincare line is physician-formulated and proven to treat, heal and rejuvenate. I've been using these four products:
I have normal-to-dry skin and all of these products have been amazing to use. I rotate these moisturizers out with some of the others I have but have been using them at least 4 times a week for the last month and a half. I also really love the cleansing lotion! It has easily become a part of my daily routine (as you can see by the half-empty bottle).
Another really unique product is the AloeGlyC Exfoliator. I wash my face, then use the exfoliator and it's so neat in that it you don't have to rinse. You simply apply, wait 10-15 minutes for it to set in, and then use your moisturizer. This product is one that I will be using continuously this summer as it was formulated with a base of organic, pharmaceutical-grade aloe vera and glycolic acid that promotes smoother, softer skin - and lightens those sun spots that are very loud and proud at the moment!
Before I first started using these products, I had a sprinkling of milia (small white bumps) on my left cheekbone. It wasn't something super noticeable but as I have had very few issues with my skin, their appearance was a little frustrating. Since using Lexli, the bumps are virtually gone and I first noticed them starting to disappear with the use of the AloeGlyC.
As always, I want to be transparent in my skincare routine. While I still have a few products from other brands that I use, Lexli has 100% become a part of my daily skincare routine (and I've been recommending to my friends, too). Be sure to check out the Lexli website to learn all about their line of products as they have something for every skin type.

Thanks to Lexli for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.
There's something about a fresh manicure that makes you feel like you can conquer the world, am I right?! I used to only get neutral colors, like Bubble Bath (which is still a great color IMO), but over the last year, I've enjoyed switching things up a bit! Let's start with the photo above! If you want a neutral that's a little bit darker than Bubble Bath, Don't Bossa Nova Me Around may be your new go-to. Check out a few more of my favorites below.
Wedding Day - for my wedding day, I always assumed I'd go with Bubble Bath because it is a wonderful neutral. But I came across Mod About You and it was the perfect light pink that added a little personality to a traditional neutral manicure!
Valentine's Day - I never get nail art, but I couldn't resist adding a cute little pink heart to my nails for the month of love.
Summertime is calling me - My favorite summer? Hot pink! My go-to color is from OPI's Fiji Collection - Two Timing the Zones.
The perfect neutral - when fall rolled around, I was ready for a change from hot pink, so I mentioned to my manicurist that I was looking for something kind of grey, kind of pink, kind of purple, kind of white. He nailed it with OPI's Frenchie Likes to Kiss.
Emerald vibes - When it comes to a manicure, I normally don't go for colors that aren't in the pink, red, neutral tones, but this year, I was ready to switch tings up! I opted for Amazon-Amazoff for something different for fall.
Blue For You - A blue mani for this gal? Never, would've been the answer a few years ago. But this color has be sold. Less is Norse is a color I always receive compliments on.
Cherry Cola - How gorgeous is this rich raspberry color? It was part of OPI's CocaCola collection and it's one I'm keeping in my mani favorites because I love the hue! The color? Get Cherried Away.
Green with envy - Similar to my other green manicure, I chose this one for Christmas instead of a traditional red and I love how it turned out. This color is OPI's Is There a Spear In Your Pocket.
I wrote a post on lash extensions a few years ago but wanted to share some updated FAQs on my experience, where I go, what to expect, and more! I first tried them while competing for Miss North Carolina back in 2013, as it alleviated the need to apply lash strips each time I went on stage. I definitely fell in love with them but ultimately decided to switch back to mascara.
Since 2013, I've had them off and on and each time, I love them more than the last! At first, you may think whoa, those are some serous lashes, but you quickly get used to the ease and volume of your new lashes. I've had the most comments, inquiries, and questions in regards to this beauty secret -- so here's the skinny on lash extensions.
Who does your lashes?
I have found two people in Wilmington who I absolutely adore, and this is key! Remember, the person doing your lashes is touching the area around your eyes, so you need to make sure that a) they are certified and b) that the application will work for you. I currently see Maari at Beauty Bar Boutique, located in The Forum, which is in the same shopping center as my store.
I cannot stress how important it is to find a great person for lashes. Not only is safety important, but so is professionalism. In full transparency, the person I was seeing a few years ago ended up being very un-professional in a variety of ways, and I ultimately had to make the switch for the sake of my eye-safety, time, etc.
How long does it take to get them applied?
For a full set, it can take anywhere from 2 to three hours, depending on the look you are going for. I've fallen asleep in both a full-set application and a fill-in. It goes by more quickly than you think. A fill in takes a little more than an hour.
How does it work?
With my classic application, Maari individually applies a lash to my each of my lashes. Right now, I'm going for length.
How long do they last?
Two to three weeks on average. I get fill-ins every two-three weeks but I'm very careful in not touching my lashes.
What kind of lashes do you have?
They are Sugarlash Pro and in length, they range from 4 - 13mm.
How much do they cost?
This isn't a cheap endeavor - a full set can run between $150-300 depending on where you are located. Fill-ins are generally less than $100, between $40-$85 in this area.
Don't your lashes fall out?
You may not realize it, but you naturally lose lashes every day. So yes, you will see some shedding, but not a ton more than you normally would (should you go to the right technician). After stopping application the last time, I didn't notice a huge difference in the fullness in my natural lashes - though I of course missed my extensions! I will say that I used Rodan and Fields Lash Boost and it did help my natural lash length growth.
Do you still wear eye makeup?
I personally hardly wear eye makeup now - if I'm going somewhere special, I'll add a little liner to my top lashes, mascara for my lower lashes, and some shadow, but for the most part, I'm sans-eye makeup with lash extensions.
How do you wash your face?
The same as I normally do aside from staying away from my lash line. I keep any oil-based products far, far away (oil will loosen the bond), and gently use a q-tip to get any hard to reach places around my lashes. There are also certain makeup removers that are created just for eyelash extensions.
Where should I get them done?
You'll see ads for lash extensions all over the place - nail salons included - but I would highly recommend seeing a certified technician. Because these are going by your eyes, double-check before your technician gets started and make sure you are 100% confident in the person who will be doing them.
Anything else?
I would definitely recommend taking photos of what you want and getting advice from your technician as to what works with your features. That will eliminate any surprise or confusion when you look in the mirror!
One of the things I get messages about most on Instagram is surprisingly my makeup routine! After years of doing pageants and wearing heavy makeup for events and appearances, my every day has been pared down to my favorite products for a more natural every day look. I'm sharing my tutorial on Instagram Stories (saved to my highlights!) but below you can find what I use on an every day basis!
Foundation
Top Pick: Peach Perfect
I've been using this foundation for a short time, but I'm loving it so far! It's a lightweight semi-matte finish, but if you like a more dewy look (like I do), you can always use a dewy setting spray at the end of your makeup! I use it with this brush.
Other Great Options: Estee Lauder DoubleWear and It Cosmetics CC Cream
Concealer
Top Pick: Naked Concealer
I love this concealer! I've been using it for almost a year and it's worked great for both my summer and winter makeup routines.
Blush/Bronzer/Highlighter
Blush: Estee Lauder Trio
Bronzer: MAC Bronzing Powder
Bronzer/Blush Combo: Too Faced Sweetie Pie Palette
Highlighter: Bobbi Brown Mini (I also love the Shimmer Brick)
My blush trio from Estee Lauder is so old but this palette is very similar (thinking about making the switch soon!) I use a combination of the above pretty much every day. The Too Faced Sweetie Pie is the perfect blush/bronzer option for the gal on the go and it's my go-to for when I'm in a hurry.
Eyeshadow and Mascara
Shadow: It Cosmetics Superhero Palette
Mascara: Diorshow
I have lash extensions so I very rarely wear mascara these days, but I will occasionally layer on Diorshow on my bottom lashes (and on my extensions if I'm getting close to needing a fill-in). I have also been using the Superhero Palette by It Cosmetics for quite some time and I absolutely love the color options!

I've been in a bit of a makeup rut these days... I've been using the same products for years, but lately, I've just been wanting something more. Estee Lauder's DoubleWear has been my go to for what feels like forever, but my skin has seemed dry as of late, so I was wanting something that left more of a dewy finish. Though I love the way my face looks when I wear a good amount of makeup, I want my skin to look as if the makeup is barely there, if that makes sense. There were a few strike-outs, but I came across Too Faced's Born This Way and liked it enough to try it out for a few weeks.
I've rotated through both of them, combined them, mixed them with other products that I have in my makeup bag, and more. I also used the same brush with each so I could truly tell what I liked best. After a month's use of my newest product and years of experience with the other, I can definitely say that I've noticed pros and cons from both.
Estee Lauder's DoubleWear - $42, 1 oz
Pros:
- Long-lasting staying power - no need for touch ups
- Buildable coverage
- Doesn't leave skin dry
Cons:
- Sometimes appears matte
- Can look heavy
Too Faced's Born This Way - $39, 1 oz
Pros:
- Buildable coverage
- Dewy finish
- Lightweight feel that makes my skin feel fresh
- Pump dispenser
Cons:
- Not as long lasting
The Verdict
It was a tough one, but long-lasting coverage is a huge factor for me when choosing makeup. I absolutely love the finish that Born This Way offers, but I found that by the end of a day at the store, it just doesn't have the staying power that DoubleWear has. I tried layering on more, but I don't love wearing a ton of foundation. I have actually found myself pouring out a lesser portion of DoubleWear and adding just a touch of the Born This Way which gives off a more dewy look! And adding in a moisturizer or serum helps as well. If you love the dewy look, try this product as well!
What is your go-to foundation? I'm always open for trying new ones!

If you're like me, you love your tried-and-true makeup products. I have some products I've used for years, and once I know something works, I'm fine to keep it the same for awhile. But every so often, I like to switch things up and try something new. My last trip to Ulta was meant just to find a new foundation, but next thing you know, I ended up with multiple new products to try.
If you've been a friend of mine for awhile - or if you've followed Southern Style for longer than, oh, a week - then you probably know there have been the many hair stage of Zelle. I can't seem to stick with one thing for long when it comes to my hair, but that has less to do with indecisiveness and more to do with the fact that I have naturally fine and thin hair.
For the most part, my makeup and skincare routine stays fairly the same year round, but when the seasons change, I do often switch out products from time to time. I've started using a few new things over the last couple of months that I can't get enough of! I thought I would share my night and day time beauty routines that are currently in place.
One thing is for certain - my makeup bag is full of products and I use only a handful of them every single day. I like to spend as little time as possible on my makeup during the work week, so I've mastered my 6:30am makeup routine - I'd much rather spend a few more minutes snuggling with the pup or in the Starbucks line.
Lash extensions are definitely my favorite beauty secret. I first gave them a try when I was competing for Miss North Carolina in 2013, as it alleviated the need to apply lash strips each time I went on stage. I definitely fell in love with them, but ultimately did not keep them up and decided to switch back over to using mascara.
About a month ago, I began thinking of ways I could better take care of my face. I've been lucky enough to have fairly good skin, but because of that, I've not always been as diligent as I could be in terms of using good products. And just the other day while doing my makeup, I noticed that a few "laugh lines" are starting to show on my forehead. No doubt, I needed a new product to give my skin a little bit of restoration.
In the past month, I've had quite a few requests for makeup tutorials and product information, and it really began after I started using a new makeup foundation! I had been using the same foundation for awhile, but decided to switch it up and give the Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation a try, and it really has made all the difference!
makeup finishing spray, lengthening mascara, makeup remover
My makeup routine is relatively similar no matter the occasion, as I generally use the same products for work versus a night out. For a date night with Stephen though, I normally step it up a notch, and I use a little more product here or there. I was fortunate enough to review a few Mary Kay products from consultant Elizabeth Walden that I've been using every day since I received them, though my favorite has to be the Lash Love Lengthening Mascara. It's perfect for layering on so I can make my lashes more dramatic if need be. My other regular products include a foundation, contouring palette, bronzer, and blush -- and a few other products here or there -- but I also really love the makeup finishing spray. I'm now using it before work to keep my makeup in place all day, but it's perfect to spritz on over my date night makeup as well. After my night is over, the oil free eye makeup remover is the perfect addition to my nightly beauty routine. My eyes are relatively sensitive to products, so I love that this is oil free.
Overall, my beauty routine stays the same throughout the seasons. I've used the same bronzer for years, and though I've switched back and forth between foundations, I use the same types of products everyday. I mostly use the same products for a day at the office and a night out, but I just vary in how and how much I apply.
I love giving new beauty products a try, so I was thrilled to try Younique's Lucrative Lipgloss in these two colors. I have used Younique's mascara in the past, which is amazing, so I knew I would love the lipgloss as well. I did use a lip liner before applying a gloss, as that is what I do in my everyday makeup routine, but I loved the combination of the gloss paired with the light lip liner. I used the same color for both, and the results were equally great. I can't pick a favorite color as they are both so unique, but they are definitely used quite frequently. Follow along with Lauren, my Younique stylist, here and here.
