Keeping Jewelry Safe During Summertime Travel

This summer, we have been traveling so much. I've flown to Nashville and Atlanta thus far and will be headed to St. Lucia after the wedding for our honeymoon, plus countless road trips to the mountains, Charleston, and more. One thing I'm always conscious of while traveling is my jewelry. While my "costume jewelry" isn't all that valuable, I have pieces that are both valuable and sentimental - which means that I am incredibly careful with them when packing!

Check out some of these tips for traveling with jewelry - and the most important one is #5!

1. Pack Light: Particularly when I'm flying, I try to keep my jewelry to a minimum, particularly my valuable pieces. I try to only take pieces that are in my normal routine: my engagement ring, college ring, pearl earrings, and watch. Those are pieces I wear virtually every day. I may pack a necklace or two that I can wear while traveling and also accessorize other looks with while out of town, but I do try to be conscious of how much I pack.

2. Keep Jewelry Bags: I have what feels like a million of those little jewelry bags that your favorite pieces come in when you make a purchase, but they are perfect for traveling. I put small earrings inside a small bag which then goes into my main jewelry container in an effort to keep them together, and the bags are also perfect for keeping necklaces from tangling.

3. Carry It With You: Flying to your destination? Keep your valuables with you! Though it may be easier to toss it into your packed luggage, come up with a good system to store in your carry-on. Even better, wear some of your pieces so that you know exactly where they are all at all times.

4. Make Notes: I'm the worst about thinking I packed something only to realize I left it behind. Make a detailed packing list that includes jewelry and make note of what jewelry you're taking. That way, when you're packing up to go home, you know exactly what pieces to be accounted for.

5. Get Insurance: This is the big one! My engagement ring is definitely the piece of jewelry I worry about the most while traveling, so I don't take it off for fear of misplacing it. However - Stephen had it insured before it was even placed on my finger! The sentimental value of this ring could never ever be replaced, but there is some peace of mind knowing that if something were to happen, it is in fact insured! Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company has been exclusively insuring jewelry for more than 100 years and offers repair or replacement coverage. And the best news? That includes worldwide travel protection for jewelry and watches. Coverage includes loss, theft, damage and mysterious disappearance, so before your summertime travels, get the right coverage now! Investigate your current policies to see if your jewelry is covered - because no matter how careful we are with our jewelry, accidents happen. That's why there's insurance. Don't go anywhere before you learn all about specialized jewelry insurance - trust me, you'll feel relieved knowing that your favorite pieces are protected from the "what-ifs."
