9 to 5 Fit

tank / pants (in soft seafoam) / wedges / belt / similar scarf c/o Charming Charlie / FitBit / desk

Ever since I started working full-time after college, I've found that I often get in a rut with maintaining my fitness while also being behind a desk all day. To top it off, I also have this blog which means even more time on the computer when I get home. I have started scheduling my Pure Barre workouts in advance in an effort to stay in a routine, but even that can get difficult when you factor in the offerings for the class schedule, friend and family time, and working late.

I've been making some adjustments at work, including using a new product called Cubii, an under-desk elliptical that allows for you to stay active while going about your daily activities. I find myself so sedentary during most of the day (unless I'm running back and forth to the printer), so I loved the idea of having a device that allowed me to get a little moderate activity in while still accomplishing my to-do list. It's so easy to get caught up in the task in front of you, and hours can go by without ever taking a break. I've tried creating my own stand-up desk, but I often end up sitting back down as my setup isn't all that efficient. The Cubii, however, solves that problem.

Though it's great in my home office, it's even better to have at work - mainly because I spend more time there but also because of how well it fits under my desk. It's also quiet, which allows you to pedal away without disturbing your coworkers. Some other great features? There's an app that allows you to track your strides and calories, and it also connects seamlessly with a FitBit, which is perfect for me as that is the fitness tracker of my choice. I've set goals for myself, and there's a reminder feature to encourage me to pick up my lazy feet and start pedaling.

Tips to stay 9-5 fit:
  • Keep a bottle of water on your desk: Make a goal for how many ounces you want to achieve. I've been slacking on my water intake the last few weeks and I can certainly tell.
  • Take a break every 50 minutes: Stand up and stretch and/or walk around - anything to give your eyes and mind a break from the work that's in front of you.
  • Wear a fitness tracker and set a step goal: I personally love the FitBit Charge HR. It tracks activity, heart rate, and sleep patterns.
  • Pack your lunch: On busy days, it is so tempting to go through a drive-thru for a quick lunch. I've been trying to pack my lunch, and more often than not, a packed lunch is much better than a meal eaten out. I also pack snacks to keep away the cravings.
  • Schedule your workouts: Get into a routine! Build your schedule at the beginning of the week, and always fit in time for a workout, even if it's only a 15 minute Tone It Up video or a quick walk. (I just snagged this calendar to keep me organized).
  • Make workout dates instead of dinner dates: Planning an early morning run or workout class with a friend means you're less likely to cancel.
  • Buy a Cubii!
